Gabriel Project needs actors to fill 11 roles

Someone still needs to fill the shoes of a baker, mysterious man, Snow White, and various other roles for the Gabriel Project's latest production.

Auditions for “Into the Woods” will be held at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Veterans Memorial Middle School, Main Road and Chestnut Avenue.

Anyone planning to audition should prepare the song of their choice with a CD and be prepared to read from the script.

The following roles are available: Narrator, Baker, Jack, Stepsisters, Mysterious Man, Cinderella’s Prince, Steward, Giant, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Milky White.

The director is Bryan Mead.

Show dates are May 13 to 15.

Students, teachers to display artwork

In conjunction with National Youth Art Month, Vineland Public Schools will be hosting the 12th Annual District-wide Student Art Exhibit.

The event is scheduled at D’Ippolito Elementary School, 1578 N. Valley Ave. on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.

The displays consist of artwork created by children in kindergarten through grade in all eight elementary schools in the district. This year, in addition to the student work, elementary art teachers will also be displaying their work.

Vineland’s ‘High School Musical’

The Vineland High School “Cap ‘n Dagger” club will perform “High School Musical” on stage in the Vineland High School South auditorium on March 11, 12, and 13.

Doors open at 6 p.m. on all three nights. The curtain rises at 7 p.m. for all shows.

Landis students plan own night on Broadway

Check out this song and dance routine at Landis Middle School.

Students from the school will perform "Songs and Dance of Broadway -- Landis Style" on Thursday, Feb. 25 and Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $5 each and will be sold at the door. The school is located at 61 W. Landis Ave.

According to director Mark Melamed, students in the show will perform a mix of song and dance from 14 Broadway productions, including "Annie," "Grease," "Seussical" and "The Sound of Music."

Author talks, sings for Mennies kids

Students at Mennies Elementary School recently enjoyed an interactive program with children's book author and singer Daryl Cobb, said Elena Bermudez, school media specialist.

Cobb has written eight children's books and created an album of children's songs. He shared his personal history, sang, read his books and interacted with the students to create new stories.

Bay-Atlantic Symphony offers teachers free concert tickets

Local teachers and music educators can reserve free tickets for 2010 education concerts, sponsored by the Bay-Atlantic Symphony.

The 2010 Gus Cilento, MD Education Concerts, will take place:

- 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 28 at Rowan University’s Pfleeger Concert Hall, 201 Mullica Hill Rd., Glassboro;

- 9:45 a.m. Friday, April 30 at the Frank Guaracini Jr. Performing Arts Center at Cumberland County College, Sherman Avenue and College Drive, Vineland; and

- 10:30 a.m. and noon Tuesday, May 4 at the Richard Stockton College Performing Arts Center, Jimmie Leeds Road, Galloway Township.

These 45-minute concerts, titled “How Music Talks: Rhythm and Melody,” will consist of works that show in contrasting ways how music talks.

Bishop Schad celebrates Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, Bishop Schad Regional School recently held an African Acrobat program for kindergarten through eighth-grade students.

The five-person group, the members of which hail from Kenya, featured gymnastics, limbo, juggling, balancing, hoop diving, and human pyramid-building in the show. They engaged the students in their demonstrations of their incredible skill and talents, as well as humor.

The students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the program, advancement director Amy Bencie said.

Two students head to KYW Newsradio

Two students in the Vineland High School Communication, Media and Technology Small Learning Community recently received an opportunity to intern with KYW Newsradio in Philadelphia, according to Erika Cowdright, the SLC administrator.

Senior Steven Forcinito and junior Ryan Steinbronn will participate in the KWY Newsradio 2009 NEWSTUDIES program, which will take place over six Saturday mornings beginning this weekend. The program will the VHS students a first-hand look at the inner workings of KYW Newsradio and CBS3 television from anchors, reporters, editors and station managers.

Before Lent, celebrate Carnevale

The Sicilian-American Club of South Jersey and the Italian Cultural Foundation will host an Italian Mardi Gras, Carnevale, from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Consalo dining hall at the Louis and Josephine Buondonno Forum at St. Augustine College Preparatory College, 611 Cedar Ave., Richland.

Carnevale, a celebration traditionally held prior to Lent, will feature fine food provided by Clorinda’s Catering, music by Idea 71 and dancing. Costumes are encouraged.

Tickets are $50 for adults, $25 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children ages 5 and younger.

Tickets must be purchased by Tuesday, Feb. 9.

‘How the Elephant Got His Trunk’

Puppeteer Jim West is ready to educate Vineland's youth "How the Elephant Got His Trunk" at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The show is at Frank Guaracini Jr. Fine and Performing Arts Center, Cumberland County College, Sherman Avenue and College Drive, Vineland. Admission is $5.

It is recommended for ages 5 to 9, the show by this master puppeteer brings to life the Rudyard Kipling's classic story in a large-scale puppet extravaganza. Also, colorful rod puppets perform a madcap Barnyard Opera to the accompaniment of Mozart, Strauss, Rossini and other classical greats.

At VHS, a dozen students reciting

Twelve Vineland High School students will show off their memorization and presentation skills Tuesday by reciting poems during a regional competition sponsored by the Playwrights Theater in Madison, NJ.

"This was a daunting assignment and the students worked very hard," Panichella said.

The winners included: 1st period winners for Ms. Marcello: Jessica Malatesta, Rosica Brown, Marquee Hartsfield; 4th period winners for Miss Panichella: Helen Torres, Angela Muzzarelli, and Zachary Cook; 7th period winners for Ms. Marcello: Charlotte Harold, Lauren D'Ottavio, Jamuel Feliciano; and 9th period winners for Miss Panichella: Adrian Lelli, Jasmine Boone, and Deanna Denelsbeck.

The Gabriel Project's first fundraiser for its 20th Anniversary Year, titled “A Night on Broadway” has been scheduled for Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30 at Veterans Memorial School, 424 S. Main Road.

A celebration fit for MLK

The Vineland African American Community Development Corporation will host a two-event tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The first event will be a banquet at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at the North Italy Hall, 414 Virano Lane, Vineland.

The second event will be a breakfast at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at Landis Intermediate School, 63 W. Landis Ave., Vineland.

Three students join All-South Jersey orchestra

Three student musicians from Vineland Public Schools qualified to perform on Jan. 10 with the All South Jersey Junior and Senior high School Orchestra at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees, according to Craig Phillips, district string ensemble director.

Senior cellist Daniel Bradbury and junior violinist Alexandra Yeager were both selected to the senior high orchestra, Phillips said. For Bradbury, it was a second consecutive successful audition. Angelina Predit, an eighth grade student at Landis Middle School, also earned a seat in the junior high orchestra.

More than 800 student musicians from all over South Jersey auditioned for the two orchestras.

Sunday’s concert is set for 3 p.m.

Broadway star could take city stage

The Landis Theatre hopes to land Bernadette Peters as its opening act, city and theater officials said Tuesday night.

Sandy Forosisky, the city's redevelopment director, told City Council the theater's grand opening has been pushed back to May and the theater is negotiating with Peters -- a Golden Globe Award-winning actress well known for her roles in Broadway musicals -- to headline its first major performance.

"We're working to finalize a contract to have Bernadette Peters as our opening act," Joe Marcello, the theater's artistic director, said in an interview Tuesday evening.
