Students from Sabater Elementary School recently presented a check to the American Red Cross for $2,059. for the Haiti earthquake relief effort.

The funds were collected by students and staff, said Jon Craig, a third grade teacher at Sabater who organized the drive.

"All of this money was collected in-house from a concerned Sabater family who wants to reach out and help others in need," Craig said. "It was really fantastic to see the generosity and compassion that people have for one another."

A giant check representing the collection was presented to Pamela Grites, executive director of the Southern Shore Chapter of the Red Cross, at an assembly held during the school's Read Across America celebration.
